I teamed up with Fresh Design to work on the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival. Our brief was to forge a strong link between Dublin city and the festival. Our insight was that all of Dublin is a stage. Even the most unexamined life bristles with stories and drama.
We sent photographer Matthew Thompson out on the streets to document ordinary people, and we added some words to suggest the undercurrents between them – words which suggest the mixed bag of ambiguous and conflicting emotions that characterise so many of our relationships, and also form the grand themes of theatre. The only direction Matthew gave the people was to be ‘most themselves’. We think their silence speaks volumes.
The following year we returned for a repeat performance, but with a fresh new look:
